What is YogaVotes?

YogaVotes is a nonpartisan campaign to engage the yoga community in the 2012 election and beyond by sparking higher voter turnout among the 20 million Americans who practice yoga.

What is the goal of this movement?

To transform civic participation by bringing the principles and voices of 20 million yogis to the polls.

Why mix yoga and politics?

For many people who practice yoga we find our yoga affecting our knowledge of our bodies, what we buy, and the way we treat people. For yoga to affect the decisions we make for our schools, communities and country is a logical extension of this process.

Participation and trust in the political process is at an all time low. What if we brought the practices of inclusivity, compassionate action, and collaboration to the political arena? Rather than turn away from politics, YogaVotes offers an opportunity to infuse politics with the values that matter to us.

Who is YogaVotes?

YOU are YogaVotes. Imagine 20 million voters, voting from their hearts, with their voices, and based on their values. We have created a vehicle for you to engage your friends, family, and fellow yogis in the 2012 election. Through events, social media, small circle meetings, and workshops at your local yoga studio, you can inspire those around you to join this movement and vote their values. How will you participate?

Do I need to give money to participate in YogaVotes?

We are people-powered! Your investment in YogaVotes will help expand this campaign to a new yogi, a new studio, a new city, or a whole new state. If you can give, please do.

How can I get involved?

1. Pledge to vote in the 2012 election at www.YogaVotes.org
2. Participate in the conversation on Facebook, Twitter, and with your friends and family, and yoga community.
3. Attend a YogaVotes event and bring your friends.
4. Sign your studio up to be a studio partner of YogaVotes.
5. Sign up to be a leader in the YogaVotes movement.
6. VOTE.

What issues or candidates is YogaVotes supporting?

As a nonpartisan campaign, YogaVotes is not interested in telling anybody how to vote. We just want people to get out there and do it in their own way! Get informed about the voting process, the issues and the candidates so that you can make the right choice for you. We want you and your community to see the impact of your participation.

Why is YogaVotes nonpartisan?

YogaVotes is an inclusive campaign. We aim to increase civic participation, because we know that our community and our country are stronger when more of us voice our truth. We also know that people are passionate about their values and their politics. From a nonpartisan platform, we can elevate conscious and compassionate conversation about what we believe.

Who is behind this effort?

Off the Mat, Into the World is the leading force in mobilizing yogis and activists to take what they learn on their mats out into the world to create positive social impact. We do this through leadership training, network building, and local and global service projects. Using yoga as a tool for personal transformation, everyday we’re mobilizing a new wave of activists to lead effectively and serve sustainably. Empowering yogis to vote is the next step.
